Rory's arc is a reality check.
this review gave my sister a mid life crisis.
Hello everyone,
Headphones in and play this on Spotify before or while reading this for a little more feels.
Walking on the footpath of a metropolitan city can be exciting but the stranger’s faces that once held the freedom of the unknown slowly turn isolating and lonely. Their eyes rarely meet yours and when they do, a smile can never be expected. The concrete jungle lacks the charm of a small town where everyone knows everyone and even though I have never experienced such a life, somehow I miss it.
Gilmore girls manages to envelope you into a world which feels like coming home that you never knew was yours but it’s been waiting for you snuggled into a nook of Netflix's modern content.
The world of Lorelai, a once teen mom who has raised Rory, a 16 year old quiet but intelligent teen aspiring to go to Havard has eccentric characters paired with snappy and quick witted dialogues. It's the gospel for 90s pop culture references and fashion moments.
But the show has more to offer than the magic of Stars Hollow town, there's a picture of painful reality. Rory Gilmore, the protagonist, is considered either a ruined character or a cautionary tale but I think she's the accurate representation of cracking under pressure.
Being a straight A student, Rory is an over achiever who aims to live the American dream. We witness her arc turn from ‘Mary,’ a miss goody two shoes to a lost girl in the chaos of hustle, struggling to live up to her High school peak. She was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere and watching her stuck in this pattern seems a little too familiar in today’s oversaturated competitive market.
It reminds me of my elder sister, an exceptionally smart student with the potential to be a doctor but socially awkward and would cry at the drop of a hat. Today, she is unrecognizable with a naughty toddler, a great social life and a graphic designing career. She has grown and faltered at many steps similar to Rory. I often wonder if we are being unfair by holding on to their past selves and expecting achievements from a life that they have left long behind.
Rory too was constantly praised, put on a pedestal and applauded for being a golden child. She seemed to live in a delusion that she is inherently smart and this would be enough. Once, she enters into a world without plaid skirt uniforms and red markers, her illusion shatters. She is drowning in the bottomless sea of smart students and the foreign concept of hard work has to be quickly familiarized.
I have yet to see such a realistic portrayal of a character who captures the essence of dealing with the hardships of adulthood so brilliantly. As a young adult who cannot seem to have the answer to the question, ‘What’s your 5 year plan?’ in an interview, Rory simply feels relatable.
This show is a comforting hug to everyone. A consolation for those struggling in academics, a parallel journey for those on the path of self-discovery and a shoulder of solidarity for those whose futures looks too different than the answer they gave as a child when asked, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ They never realized when they grew up and became something they never imagined.
It’s a reminder that we are all in this together and it’s going to be alright. We need to take some time to appreciate the little things in life like Loreali does with the very first snowfall of the year. Don’t wait too long to give this wholesome show a watch or as the Gilmore Girls would say - Oye with the Poodles already!
Sarrah xx
